“Buyer Beware”

Posted in response to the skeptics who are commenting negatively about window replacement. Regarding the comments about window replacement being a bad investment, I’m admitedly biased as an owner of a window business. However, I’ve also operated an insulation business for six years and before that I worked to improve the energy assistance program. While you can often get the best “bang for your buck” by sealing cracks, HVAC ducts and adding attic insulation, etc, single pane windows are a major source of heat loss and heat gain and it is often a wise decision to replace them. Some studies show that there is 80X more heat loss through single pane windows than through the adjoining walls. “Buyer beware” should guide all interactions with home improvement salesmen. We often tell customers that it would be a poor investment to replace their windows. We try to evaluate our customers entire situation, if you hate your current windows, if you plan to stay in the home for five or more years, if you’ve lived with storm windows and you hate them, or perhaps you understand that new window and doors may substantially increase the value of your home or you have taken care of the easy projects (caulking) – then perhaps replacing windows would be a wise and sound investment. Many replacement window professionals are good and honest small business owners. A few are “Tin Men” who discredit the whole industry. Know who to trust, check references, call the BBB and if the sales person is too pushy look for a better company. We have lots of information available at our website to help you make an educated decision. See www.windowgallery.com. At bottom, those who insist that only their product or solution is valuable, are not to be trusted.
